Unicorn Tunnel - Submitted by R. A. Green
When I was around five years old, my Grandfather, Charles Wilkes, worked at the Unicorn pub. My mother and I were waiting for him in the front yard of the pub. I noticed a large, square slab, about three feet from the wall, with an iron ring attached I said "What's this for mum" Mother looked at it and said to ask granddad. Which I did later. He scratched his bald patch and look up to a wooden beam sticking out of the wall above with a pulley on the end. Its probably to lift the barrel of beer of the wagons and that is what they would tie the end of the rope to. When I was about 12 years old, there were extensive renovations to the Unicorn and when they came to remove this stone slab a stairway was discovered beneath it and a tunnel leading across to the area of St Stephens Church. More stories of monk like figures ensued but the "Hole" was soon filled in so that the necessary extensions could be carried out.
